Florence of the Medici, and Cosimo the First's daughter strangled by her husband with her family's approval. Guerrazzi, repeatedly imprisoned for conspiracy, wrote his historical novels as nationalist allegories; he was later dictator of Tuscany for a few months in 1849.

Repeatedly imprisoned for conspiracy, he served briefly as dictator of Tuscany during the revolution of 1849 and wrote historical novels that were read as calls to independence. His works include The Siege of Florence, Isabella Orsini, and Beatrice Cenci.
