On the Soul and the Resurrection is Gregory of Nyssa's profound Christian dialogue on death, immortality, purification, and bodily resurrection. Cast as a conversation with his sister Macrina after the death of their brother Basil, the work consciously recalls Plato's Phaedo while transforming its philosophical inheritance through biblical theology. Its style is contemplative, dialectical, and pastoral, joining metaphysical argument to consolation in the face of grief. Gregory of Nyssa, one of the Cappadocian Fathers, was a fourth-century bishop and theologian whose thought helped shape Nicene Christianity. His intellectual formation combined classical philosophy, scriptural exegesis, and ascetic spirituality. The deaths within his family, especially Basil's, and Macrina's reputation for wisdom and holiness deeply inform the work, giving it both doctrinal seriousness and personal urgency. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in early Christian theology, the history of ideas about the soul, and the encounter between Greek philosophy and Christian revelation. It rewards careful reading, offering not merely an argument for resurrection but a luminous meditation on hope, personhood, and divine restoration. Zusammenfassung
On the Soul and the Resurrection is work by Gregory of Nyssa, written upon his brother Basil's death, about the immortal soul and the infinity of God. The work is written in form of Socratic dialogue between Gregory who plays the part of an interlocutor and his older sister, St. Macrina, who plays the part of Socrates. Gregory deals with two topics of considerable importance in Christian theology: the immortality of the soul and the physicality of the resurrection. He confronts many of the arguments made by those who deny the existence of the soul or resurrection and gives thorough answers to the questions about the soul and the resurrection.
