Just fifty years ago, this land had no name on the map ? seven scattered sheikhdoms surviving off a collapsed pearl trade, with nothing to suggest it would soon build the world's tallest tower and send a probe to Mars.
The Emirates: From the Roots of the Land to the Second Centennial traces that transformation from its true beginning ? 210,000-year-old human footprints in the desert ? through ancient copper trade, Islamic conquest, British "Trucial" treaties, the pearl economy's collapse, and the discovery of oil that changed everything. It follows the founding vision of Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid, profiles all seven emirates individually, and doesn't shy away from the hard chapters: Dubai's 2009 debt crisis, the unresolved Abu Musa and Tunbs dispute, and the resource-curse failures of nations that had oil and squandered it.
Meticulously sourced and unflinchingly balanced, this is history told with both admiration and honesty.
From there, the book covers the Union's institutional founding, Dubai's bold bet on trade and aviation, the modern era of space exploration and diplomacy, and dedicated chapters on Emirati heritage, architecture, the seven individual emirates, women's institutional empowerment, sports, tourism.
Crucially, this is not a celebration without scrutiny.
