Outlawed for killing one of the king's foresters, Robin Hood builds a life in Sherwood Forest with a growing band of merry men - Little John, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlet - robbing corrupt nobles and clergy, feeding the poor, and outwitting the Sheriff of Nottingham at every turn. Howard Pyle's retelling strings the old ballads together into one continuous story, full of archery contests, disguises, and the kind of clever trickery that made Robin Hood a folk hero in the first place. This is the version that fixed Robin Hood in the popular imagination for generations of readers and every film and cartoon adaptation that came after - adventure, humor, and a very clear sense of whose side you're supposed to be on.
