John Robison's Proofs of a Conspiracy against all the Religions and Governments of Europe is a vehement counter-Enlightenment polemic that assembles correspondence, reports, and interpretive argument into a warning about secret societies, especially the Bavarian Illuminati and strands of Freemasonry. Written in the anxious aftermath of the French Revolution, the book blends documentary citation with moral alarm, presenting revolution not as spontaneous political crisis but as the calculated product of clandestine philosophy, anticlericalism, and republican subversion. Robison was a distinguished Scottish natural philosopher, mathematician, and professor at the University of Edinburgh, with strong ties to the scientific culture of the Scottish Enlightenment. His intellectual authority, however, coexisted with deep suspicion of radical political thought. Personal acquaintance with continental Masonic circles and his conservative response to revolutionary France helped shape a work in which empirical habits of collection are redirected toward ideological accusation. This book is recommended to readers interested in the history of conspiracy thought, the political culture of the 1790s, and the darker afterlife of Enlightenment rationalism. It is best read critically: not as reliable proof, but as a revealing artifact of fear, reaction, and the struggle to explain modern revolution.
