By itself, anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder killing thousands of mostly young women every year. Only 46% of those diagnosed will fully recover, while 20% develop a chronic, long-term illness. When coupled with a diagnosis of autism, treatment outcomes are even more frightening. The prescribed treatment for anorexia for those with a co-occurring diagnosis of autism is akin to torture, placing patients in environments that are in direct conflict with the sensory sensitivities and social communication challenges that are prevalent in those with autistic tendencies. The general medical establishment knows very little about the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders. But equally disturbing, at the time our daughter, Lindsay, was diagnosed with high-functioning autism and anorexia, the professionals were either unaware or not convinced that the treatment protocols they were applying were not helping her. Rather, my concerns were dismissed as those of an "enmeshed" mother. Over the course of 20 years, our family fought not just the demons of an eating disorder, but the medical community to which we looked for help, and society in general, which believed if she would "just eating something" all this would be better! As her mother, my feelings of guilt over Lindsay's illness made me question everything about myself. What had happened to make me a mother unable to protect her daughter from this evil disease? And worse, recognizing that no matter what I did, I could not fix this. Our story is one of countless others whose entire lives are literally destroyed by an enemy named Ed. It is a story that any parent who loses a child can appreciate. There is no closure, just a weight that settles on your chest that threatens to suffocate you. This book is one mother's loving gift in memory of her daughter who deserved so much better.
