In 1854 ten year old Elsie Dowdel finds herself living on the streets of New York City. She is befriended by a young orphan girl with whom she had shared food. The girls are taken in by the Children's Aid Society and started on an adventure that will take them to another state, another way of life and, perhaps, a new family.
