One thousand years after the nanite bombs murdered most of the Earth's population, Justin awakens from his cryopod in what used to be Pomona, California, in a society completely without men, somewhere technologically in the twentieth century.

The women's council of Pomona immediately take control of Justin, desperate for his, or any man's, company as well as anything that he can provide which, as a trained engineer from a time period with far superior technology, is a lot. Either reason is enough for him to become of very high interest to the highest-ranked members of their society. He can't just flee, at least not on foot, as there are no boats and the entire state is surrounded by giant insects and arachnids, many of them as big or bigger than a car.

Justin realizes quickly enough that the world he grew up in, and its fascist regime, are long gone and all that is left of his world would be found in the other cryopods, tens of thousands of them, mostly in France, that have evidently all opened up at the same time. Laura, the woman he loved before the world ended, must certainly be among them. Therefore, with whatever else is to happen, he is determined to survive and make his way to France, to Laura, to the friends he lost that would also surely be there, and for whatever else is left of his world.

Unfortunately, the women of Pomona do not want to let him go and he senses very real violence might follow him should he attempt to flee. He has superior technology built into his body, a suit of bionic augmentation armor with built-in weaponry and tools and a bee-shaped bionic android named Lincoln, both of which can be formed out of molecules hidden within his body, but that is not enough should their entire society unite against him. Their bureaucracy is great and while they argue over each's opinion on how he should be used and who he should breed with, it buys him time to come up with some peaceful escape plan. Meanwhile, the women who are not included, those lower ranked in their society, are getting annoyed and possibly violent, and, strictly speaking, not all of them may be as human as they appear.

Time is running out fast. One man cannot be shared among a nation of women, no matter how much that nation might wish it so, and Justin knows, like a lone woman on a ship trapped with desperate seamen, it would only be a matter of time before it ends in either his murder or the entire ship going down.
