INTRODUCTION
Your Weekly Path to Wellness
Welcome to the Longshore Life 52-Week Health Checklist, a practical companion to the Longshore Life Health and Wellness Guide, Second Edition, Revised. While the main guide provides comprehensive information on various aspects of health relevant to longshore work, this checklist book helps you implement that knowledge one week at a time.
The work of a longshoreman presents unique challenges to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Irregular shifts, physical demands, and workplace stressors can make consistent health habits difficult to establish. This checklist book acknowledges these realities and offers manageable weekly goals that can be adapted to your specific schedule and circumstances.
Each week focuses on a different aspect of wellness, cycling through the ten domains covered in the main Longshore Life guide:
1. Understanding and utilizing your health benefits
2. Physical health and injury prevention
3. Nutrition for energy and recovery
4. Mental health and stress management
5. Substance use awareness and recovery support
6. Family wellness and work-life balance
7. Financial wellness and planning
8. Sleep quality and recovery techniques
9. Preventative healthcare
10. Building a culture of wellness
By breaking down your wellness journey into weekly goals, this checklist makes health improvement manageable, measurable, and sustainable. Each small step builds toward significant positive changes over the course of a year.

ABOUT THE AUTHORAs a rank and file ILWU member, labor assistance professional, and Co-Chair of the Local 10 Steward Council, I have dedicated my career to supporting my fellow ILWU members in accessing the benefits and resources they have earned through our collective bargaining. My work focuses particularly on helping members break the cycle of addiction and navigate the complexities of our healthcare system.Through countless one-on-one conversations with members facing health challenges, I have witnessed firsthand how the unique demands of longshore work can impact physical and mental well-being. This experience has taught me that information alone is not enough - we need practical, manageable tools that fit into the reality of our work lives.Creating this checklist book stems from my belief that small, consistent actions lead to meaningful health improvements over time. I have seen members transform their lives not through dramatic overhauls, but through steady commitment to better choices, one week at a time. The strength of our union has always been rooted in solidarity - supporting one another through challenges and celebrating collective victories. Health and wellness are no different. When we invest in our individual well-being, we strengthen our entire ILWU family. I hope this checklist serves as a practical companion on your wellness journey, reminding you that every positive choice you make matters, and that you never walk this path alone.Stanley Scott Jr., ILWU Local 10Labor Assistance Professional & Steward Council Co-ChairEmail: stewardcouncil10@gmail.com
