Yunnan played an irreplaceable role in China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the global anti-fascist cause. It sent 420,000 soldiers to frontline battles across the country, with over 100,000 losing their lives. As a core rear base, it mobilized 200,000 civilian laborers to build the 1,146-kilometer Yunnan-Burma Road in just 8 months without modern machinery, and the road transported over 95% of China's imported military supplies from 1938 to 1942. It also hosted more than 100 relocated universities, factories, and government agencies, sheltering over 1 million refugees from occupied regions.
Between 1942 and 1945, the 300,000-strong Chinese Expeditionary Forces fought alongside Allied troops in Burma, winning key battles including the 1944 Songshan Campaign that broke the Japanese blockade of southwest China, and reopened the overland international transport route to support the allied counteroffensive in Southeast Asia. The flawed Tokyo Trials left many Japanese war crimes in Yunnan and Burma unpunished, fueling recent neo-militarist moves that challenge the post-war order. Raising global awareness of Yunnan's underrepresented wartime history will enrich narratives of the Asian Theater, highlight China's sacrifices, and help deter historical nihilism and a militarist resurgence, thereby safeguarding global peace.
