In Caohai Wetland in Guizhou, China, twelve-year-old Xiaoxi lives with her grandmother while her parents work far from home. Among the reeds, the water, and the black-necked cranes that return each winter, she finds comfort, wonder, and a deep connection to the place around her.
But when a factory is planned near the marsh, Xiaoxi is drawn into a painful conflict: the project could bring jobs closer to home, yet it could also harm the cranes' fragile refuge. As the wetland begins to change, she slowly learns that truly caring for something means trying to protect it.
A tender story of home, longing, and how kindness can grow into action.
