A tingling sensation pours through the entire body of the imprisoned prince as Princess Vayle leans forward and casts aqua eyes downward toward his dingy dungeon cell. She stands upon a luxurious marble balcony with her golden lock gleaming in the morning sunlight. Her impassioned countenance summons Prince Zarkanis, and she imparts a heartrending smile before clinging to the balcony's parapet and bursting into tears.

When Giralda, a medieval midwife, exchanges clothing with a murdered woman who just birthed the most fascinating infant her eyes ever beheld, little does she know what her claiming to be the child's mother will entail. Dragus, the evil Pithranian dictator, unknowingly selects his most despised enemy's daughter, the very child Giralda has claimed as her own, as an acclaimed princess in the Pithranian castle. Giralda is selected to serve as the princess's lady-in-waiting and is faced with the challenge of raising a respectable young lady within a milieu of wickedness and brutality. And meanwhile, the infant prince of the slain King of Shareen is confined in solitary confinement with a deaf mute, or so it is thought. In actuality, the supposed deaf mute is Dametrius the Wise, and Dametrius rears Prince Zarkanis with tutoring and training that results in a superhuman warrior destined to fight for truth and justice. When the right time comes, after Dametrius the Wise has died, Zarkanis rips the bars from his dungeon cell window and climbs the limestone wall of the princess's balcony.

Many years pass without the princess knowing where her prince lives, much less that he is imprisoned within her own castle. Nonetheless, she still dreams of him night and

day, ever since her enchanting rescue from drowning at age ten. Dametrius teaches Zarkanis the princess's true identity from the time he is a toddler, and until reaching his teenage years, Zarkanis is able to fit through the well opening in his dungeon cell and explore the waterways below. One dark and stormy night, an incredible rescue takes place after the princess sneaks from the castle to pick irises for Giralda's birthday. The princess slips from the top of a cliff and is knocked unconscious before splashing into the lake below. When she recovers consciousness on a grassy bank outside the limestone wall of the castle, she finds herself gazing upward into the enchanting eyes of Prince Zarkanis.
